Are you an International Medical Graduate (IMG) looking to practise medicine in Australia? If you're not eligible for the Competent Authority Pathway or Specialist Pathway, the Standard Pathway is likely your best route to general registration.

This guide explains who the pathway is for, how it works, and what steps are involved, so you can move forward with confidence.

Who is the Standard Pathway for?

The Standard Pathway is designed for IMGs who:

It’s ideal for doctors aiming to gain general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

What Does the Standard Pathway Involve?

To complete the Standard Pathway, IMGs must:

  1. Pass the AMC CAT MCQ written examination
  2. Complete either:
    • The AMC Clinical Exam, or
    • A Workplace-Based Assessment (WBA) via an accredited provider
  3. Undertake 12 months of supervised practice (minimum 47 weeks full-time equivalent)

On successful completion, you will receive the AMC Certificate, which enables you to apply for general registration.

Pathway Options

1. AMC Examinations Route

  • Complete both AMC written and clinical exams
  • Apply for provisional registration
  • Most IMGs follow this route

2. Workplace-Based Assessment (WBA) Route

  • Complete AMC MCQ exam
  • Secure a position with an AMC-accredited WBA provider
  • Apply for limited registration
  • Complete WBA in place of the clinical exam

Registration Types Explained

Your registration type will depend on your exam progress and job offer:

  • Provisional Registration: If you’ve passed both AMC exams
  • Limited Registration: If you've only passed the MCQ exam
    • Limited Registration for Supervised Practice
    • Limited Registration for Area of Need

Step-by-Step Registration Process

  1. Primary Source Verification (EPIC/ECFMG):
    Submit documents via EPIC for AMC verification.
  2. Pass the AMC CAT MCQ Exam
  3. Secure a Suitable Role
    This can be a hospital position or a role in an Area of Need.
  4. Apply for Registration
    Depending on exam completion, apply for provisional or limited registration.
  5. Complete Orientation & Supervised Practice
    Undertake a formal orientation to the Australian health system and complete 12 months of supervised practice (minimum 47 weeks FTE).
  6. Submit Progress Reports
    Three-month and end-of-term supervision reports are required.
  7. Complete Clinical Exam or WBA
    Depending on your route, pass the AMC Clinical Exam or complete the WBA program.
  8. Apply for General Registration
    Once you’ve fulfilled all requirements, apply for general registration online.

Working in General Practice?

If you plan to work in GP, you may also need to complete a PESCI (Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interview), particularly for limited registration roles.
