Short-Term Medical Training Pathway for SIMGs in Australia

This pathway is designed for Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) and SIMGs in training who wish to undertake up to 24 months of specialist or advanced training in Australia.
This article outlines how SIMGs can register to work in Australia via the Short-Term Training in a Medical Specialty Pathway.
Who is this pathway for?
This pathway is for SIMGs or SIMGs in training who would like to complete a short period of advanced medical training in Australia. It is intended for those who do not plan to remain in Australia permanently and are not seeking ongoing or specialist registration.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for this pathway, you must:
- Hold a primary qualification in medicine and surgery from a training institution recognised by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS).
- Have completed all required specialist training and examinations in your field, or be within two years of completion.
- Secure an offer for a specific training position in Australia.
Registration Outcome
This pathway leads to limited or provisional registration for the duration of the training only. It does not result in general or specialist registration in Australia. IMGs must return to their home country after the training concludes.
Registration Type Required
Applicants must apply for limited registration or, if eligible under the Competent Authority Pathway, may apply for provisional registration.
Application Process
Follow these steps to apply for the Short-Term Training Pathway:
- Primary Source Verification: Submit your primary and (if applicable) specialist qualifications to the AMC using ECFMG's EPIC/MyIntealth system.
- Establish an EPIC Account: Set up an account with ECFMG for credential verification.
- Secure a Training Position: Obtain an official training offer from an Australian institution.
- Assessment by Specialist Medical College: Apply to the relevant specialist medical college using form AAMC-30 for assessment of suitability for the position.
- Receive Assessment Outcome: The college will inform you of your suitability for the training post.
- Apply for Registration: Submit an application to the Medical Board of Australia for limited or provisional registration, depending on your eligibility.
Requirements While Registered
Once approved, you must:
- Commence training only after receiving formal registration approval.
- Complete orientation to the Australian healthcare system.
- Submit orientation and work performance reports after 3 months of practice.
- Submit annual work performance reports for registration renewal.
