An Australian Locum's tips for working in the UK in 2017
1. Currently a Shortage of Healthcare Staff
The exponential population growth in the UK and the increasing number of Healthcare positions available privately and publically has increased the need for Locum cover throughout the country. Globe Locums have increased their footprint to be a preferred provider for a majority of these hospitals. Now is the perfect time to be in the UK – tell anyone who will listen!!! (That’s what I’m doing).
2. Vast Travel Opportunities
Sitting on the doorstep of Europe, the UK is the best place in the world to live. Work for a few months, then travel for a few months and go on weekend trips in between. Locum wages allow you to do this comfortably!!
3. Career Development
Working in multiple departments exposes you to technology and equipment you wouldn’t have access to at home. It helped me develop my understanding and skills in areas I thought I knew… well everything. The opportunities available look fantastic on your CV.
4. Making Friends
It is quite common for Aussies and Kiwis to move to London not knowing a lot of people. For this reason, I believe travellers unconsciously open themselves to meeting new people and forming new friendships that would not originally have been formed at home. Some of my closest friends are ones that I met whilst working and travelling.
5. New Cultures
More than a third of Londoners are now foreign born - that's around 2.5 million people. The city encompasses more than 270 nationalities and 300 languages. Part of the experience of living in the UK is learning about different cultures from around the world. Believe it or not, these cultures are just as interested in hearing about Australia (snakes and spiders mainly) as many of them have not, and will never venture that far in their lifetime.
I hope my insight and experiences can give you some perspective on the exciting opportunities on offer in the UK. I am sure you understand where I am coming from if you are already here or have completed your working holiday. Please feel free to pass on my comments to anyone hoping to work in the UK and don’t forget Globe’s generous referral bonuses - £250 for the 1st, £450 for the 2nd and £600 for the 3rd referral
